Truck or Treat: 5 Iconic Horror Movie Cars

Halloween is just around the corner; as we adore all automotive stuff here at I Drive Safely, and we wait for Halloween, we assume we'd mix both. While there aren't many horror movies involving vehicles, we really had to fudge a little old TV show for one of our picks. There are a few vehicles that have given some unforgettable chills and laughs (sometimes involuntary) over the years. Here are five of our selected Halloween-ready cars.

5. The Car

There's a pretty amazing section in the film where The Car somehow managed to turn on its sides and roll over some unsuspecting deputies. It's the latest in a string of hit-and-run killings. Two bicyclists come upon a mysterious black automobile in the desert outside a town in Utah. As the car attacks a nearby school procession, the lives of the town's kids and Wade's instructor girlfriend, Lauren, are threatened. The Car is one of the great, so-bad-it’s-good movies; and yes, that's Josh Brolin’s dad, James, in the lead role, a role we thought for sure he’d want to forget.

4. Stuntman Mike’s 1970 Chevy Nova in Death Proof

This movie is the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez salute to classic 70s zombie movies. Death Proof tells Stuntman Mike's story with his cherished 1970 Chevy Nova. It's become a cult classic!

3. The Munsters’ Koach

The 60’s was known for strange television shows and the duelling creep-show families of The Munsters and The Addams Family fit right in. The Munsters get the nod from us for making their family car front and center in their show universe. Although the 1930 Addams Packard touring car was seldom used, the Munster Koach was a frequent costar. The crazy stretched-wheelbase / Model-T combination appeared in episode 4 (going by the name as Rock-A-Bye Munster), in which Lily goes to some used-car lot to purchase a car for Herman’s birthday. She wants both a T-bucket hot rod and a 1920s hearse, and requests for a customizer to blend the two. This story line fit right into the show, which was about a family of retro suburban horror movie protagonists.

2. Christine

Over 50 films have been made based on Stephen King's novels and short stories. The film adaptation of King's novel Christine was produced by horror expert John Carpenter. Penned by Bill Phillips, as well as based on Stephen King's 1983 novel of the same name, the film explores the improvements in the lives of Arnie Cunningham, his mates, his family and his adolescent rivals after Arnie buys a classic Red and White 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine. Although the film leaves a huge chunk missing from the book (in the story, the vehicle is supposedly possessed by a previous owner’s dark spirit), Christine herself, a 1958 Plymouth Fury, is as frightening as she is in the story.

1. Peterbilt 281 Tanker Truck, Duel

Before Schindler’s List, before Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones, before Jaws and Near Experiences, there was Duel. Apart from true movie enthusiasts and gear heads, few people knew of Duel, Steven Spielberg's first full-length movie. There is only one representation of the film's lead actor, a 1955 Peterbilt 281. The plot is simple; a huge, rusting semi-truck chases a lone driver through the desert. You'll certainly think twice before being angry at your fellow motorists.
